The coup d’état of May 28, 1926, led by anti-liberal military and civilians, resulted in the fall of the First Portuguese Republic and the establishment of a military dictatorship, which was transformed, after the approval of the 1933 Constitution, into the Estado Novo, a dictatorial regime that remained in power in Portugal until the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974.
